MANHATTAN, Kan. – On the heels of its first dual meet in Morgantown this season, three members of the West Virginia University wrestling team rank inside the top 20 of their respective weight classes, as announced by several publications on Tuesday.
Redshirt senior Jacob A. Smith is ranked in the top 8 nationally by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds. The Charleston, West Virginia, native appears at No. 6 according to Intermat and FloWrestling and is ranked No. 8 by The Open Mat.
Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey comes in at No. 17 in Intermat's latest top-20 poll. The Northampton, Pennsylvania, native also ranks No. 18 via FloWrestling at his weight of 125 pounds.
At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt checks in at No. 20 via The Open Mat for the second consecutive week. The Platte City, Missouri, native collected a third-place finish for the second time in as many weeks, notching four wins in his respective pool at the 2017 Lindenwood Open on Saturday.
Schmitt picked up two victories, claiming his first win of the day with a 12-3 major decision over SIUE's Lucas Bernal. Schmitt then went on to claim a 7-1 decision against Lindenwood's Hunter Harlason, before dropping a 4-3 decision to Iowa State's Ian Parker in the third round of competition. Schmitt bounced back, though, winning by fall in the first period (2:19) over unattached wrestler Kristofer Hudson. He then used a 9-2 decision over Iowa State's Markus Simmons to move to 9-2 on the year.
Mosiey also competed at the 2017 Lindenwood Open, placing sixth in his respectively pool. He notched back-to-back victories to start the tournament, most notably winning by fall over MKU's Charles McNeal in just 22.0 seconds.
The Mountaineers will open their 2017-18 home slate against No. 15 Nebraska on Saturday, Nov. 25, and it is the first of two Dollar Days planned for the year. All tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. Additionally, the first 150 fans in attendance will receive a free WVU WWE-style t-shirt.
