MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Teana Muldrow and junior guard Naomi Davenport each recorded a double-double for the second straight game as the No. 12/15 West Virginia University women's basketball team dominated Sacramento State, 101-47, on Tuesday evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (2-0) surpassed the century mark for the second straight game, marking the first time in program history the squad has posted back-to-back 100-point performances.
Coming off a career-high 30-point performance on Friday against Central Connecticut State, Muldrow again led all players in scoring with 27 points and 12 rebounds in addition to five assists. Davenport netted a career-high 22 points, chipping in 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals as well.
Four of five starters finished in double figures, as junior guard Katrina Pardee scored 15 points and senior forward Kristina King added 11. Senior guard Chania Ray dished out seven assists while grabbed a career-high nine rebounds as WVU out-rebounded Sacramento State, 55-38.
"I thought our starting five played well," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "We went to the bench. We didn't execute. I just told them in there that it didn't surprise me that some of them didn't play well because they didn't practice well the last few days. You play like you practice. A couple of them off the bench didn't practice hard, they kept making mistakes and they made the same mistakes out there in the game. I thought we had some players play hard. Teana (Muldrow) played hard. I thought Chania (Ray) played hard. Katrina (Pardee) played hard. I have to find a bench. We held them to four points the first quarter and all of a sudden, we have two girls with two fouls. We have to go to our bench and then they score seventeen."
Freshman forward Destiny Harden came up with a pair of blocks to go along with eight points and six rebounds, while freshman guard Ashley Jones and redshirt freshman forward Krystaline McCune had five points apiece.
The Mountaineers shot 53.4 percent from the field and 69.2 percent at the free-throw line. They limited the Hornets to just 24.7 percent from the field, forcing them into 22 turnovers.
Muldrow put the Mountaineers on the board with a layup, starting a 21-3 run that lasted most of the quarter. Sacramento State's Hannah Friend hit the free-throw line for a point with less than 30 seconds remaining, but McCune scored two in the paint to cap the period with WVU leading by 19. The Mountaineers limited Sacramento State to a WVU record-low four points in the quarter at 23-4, and limited the Hornets to a WVU record low 7.7 percent from the field.
Ray got the Mountaineers started in the second quarter, but Muldrow once again stole the show. After coming up with the steal that led to a jumper by Pardee, Muldrow completed a three-point play to run WVU's lead to 25 at 31-6.
Harden hit the free-throw line twice in the closing minutes of the half, sinking three of four to push the Mountaineers ahead 44-18 with 1:48 to play in the first half. Jones added a late jumper as West Virginia took a 46-21 lead to end the half.
An early 8-0 run in the third stretched the WVU lead to 34 at 57-23 on a fast break layup by Ray. West Virginia held the Hornets to just five points as Pardee went off for six points in six minutes, hitting a jumper, a fast break layup and a pair of free-throws as the Mountaineers went up by 43, taking a 76-33 advantage into the final quarter.
A pair of treys from Pardee and Davenport made it a 50-point advantage for West Virginia at 86-36 with just under seven to play in regulation. Pardee and Davenport each scored on a fast break before Muldrow sunk four straight at the charity stripe to put the Mountaineers' lead at 56. McCune followed her to the line and made three of four, putting WVU past the century mark as the Mountaineers picked up the 101-47 win.
West Virginia will finish off a three-game home stand on Sunday, hosting North Florida in nonconference action. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside the WVU Coliseum.
