"It's been tough to be on the road, especially the last two weekends with conference play, and obviously the third with Princeton, a ranked opponent," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "It's so nice to be home and deal with our home elements and not the road elements. We're so excited to play at home and host a nationally ranked OSU. They are 3-0 in conference play, and we know what is at stake."
The Mountaineers (9-3, 2-1) are 7-0 all-time against the Cowgirls (10-1-2, 3-0 Big 12). The first six meetings were decided by one goal each, and two of the last three regular-season contests have resulted in overtime victories for WVU.
Friday is the first-ever meeting between the teams when each has been nationally ranked.
Last year, with the 2016 Big 12 Conference regular-season title in hand, the No. 1 Mountaineers concluded their regular-season slate with a 3-0 win over the Cowgirls on Oct. 28, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Junior forward Sh'Nia Gordon netted the game-winner in the 49th minute. Sophomore
Rylee Foster played between the posts for 78:41 and made the team's lone save.
WVU, the five-time reigning conference champions, carries a 34-match unbeaten streak in home conference matches into Friday night, the third-longest active streak nationally. The Mountaineers have posted a shutout in seven of their last eight Big 12 home matches.
The Mountaineers opened Big 12 play with a 2-1 showing away from Morgantown, including a 1-0 victory at Kansas State on Sept. 29. The shutout was the team's seventh of the season and first against a ranked opponent.
Gordon paces the team with nine points (2 G, 5 A). Her five helpers, a career single-season high, rank No. 2 in the Big 12.
Foster shows a .736 goals-against average (GAA) and ranks No. 55 nationally, No. 4 in the Big 12.
OSU improved to 3-0 in league play last week with a 2-0 win at TCU on Sept. 29 and a 1-0 (OT) victory over Baylor in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Oct. 1. The Cowgirls are 3-0 in Big 12 play for the first time since 2011, and the team's 10 wins are the most for an OSU squad since finishing 10-10-1 in 2014.
The Cowgirls rank No. 1 in the Big 12 in scoring offense (2.54 goals/game) and points average (7.15 per game).
"They are extremely dynamic," Izzo-Brown added. "Their front four are very dynamic and have the ability and savvy to break down a backline. We have to be very organized and disciplined in our defense."
Junior forward Haley Woodard paces OSU with 15 points (6 G, 3 A). Senior Michela Ongaro has started 10 of 12 matches between the posts and shows a .78 GAA. She has made 35 saves and posted three shutouts while allowing eight goals.
