October 31, 2017 04:27 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University men's soccer alum Jack Elliott has been named a finalist for MLS Rookie of the Year, Major League Soccer announced on Tuesday.
A Mountaineer from 2013-16, Elliott played in 30 games with 29 starts at centerback for the Philadelphia Union during his rookie campaign. He scored one goal and added one assist.
"Congratulations to Jack on this amazing honor and on his fantastic rookie season," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "It's obviously a very proud moment for both Jack and our WVU soccer program. Jack is proof that our program provides our student-athletes a platform for success in the classroom and can develop players of excellence on the field capable of playing at the professional level. Not only did Jack graduate in four years with a 3.88 GPA and a degree in Management Information Systems (MIS), but now he's one of the most promising young players in all of Major League Soccer.
"Regardless of whether or not Jack ends up winning rookie of the year, his unprecedented success speaks volumes to his character, hard work and ability. Furthermore, it has showcased the Mountaineer soccer program as a place where you can achieve both a world-class education and develop a soccer foundation that prepares you for success at the next level."
Elliott helped the Union record nine shutouts in 2017, including a club-record four in a row from April 29 – May 17. He scored his first career goal on Aug. 19 at San Jose, and added an assist two matches later against Atlanta on Aug. 26. Elliott made his first career start on April 14, and he continued in the starting lineup the rest of the season.
At West Virginia, Elliott played in 72 career matches with 66 starts. He played 6,039 minutes, which ranks eighth in program history, and scored six goals and added five assists. Elliott was the program's first ever three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree. He was recognized as a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and on the All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) Team twice in his career, headlining a long list of academic honors earned in his WVU career.
Named to the Scholar All-America Second Team and the All-Great Lakes Region First Team in 2016, he anchored a back line that recorded eight shutouts, including a shutout streak that lasted a program-record seven consecutive matches and 758 minutes, as a senior.
A native of London, England, Elliott was drafted in the fourth round, 77th overall, by Philadelphia in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
