Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 6-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 (2OT) draw against Texas Tech this evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Statistically, the Mountaineers (12-3-1, 5-1-1) ran all over the Red Raiders (8-6-2, 1-4-2) tonight, finishing with a 35-11 edge in shots and a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. The draw is WVU's first of the season and first in Big 12 Conference play since a 0-0 (2OT) tie at Oklahoma on Oct. 9, 2015.
"This was tough. They definitely had a game plan to drop people and numbers into the box," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown explained. "It was tough to find space. You have to credit Texas Tech for putting numbers behind the ball.
"I thought we were resilient, and I thought we kept going and creating chances. It's just unfortunate that we couldn't put the ball in the back of the net."
WVU remains unbeaten in its last 38 home conference matches, the third-longest active streak nationally.
Mountaineer senior defender
Amandine Pierre-Louis gave WVU a lead just before halftime, as she tallied her fourth goal of the season with 54 seconds remaining in the opening half.
Junior defender
Bianca St. Georges brought the ball up the right sideline before sending a cross above the box to senior midfielder
Alli Magaletta. She immediately pushed the ball left, where Pierre-Louis was waiting. The Montreal, Quebec, native sent a long, bending shot toward the net, beating TTU goalkeeper Marissa Zucchetto to the far-right post.
The goal stood until the 61st minute, when Red Raider defender Brooke Denesik converted a free kick for her first goal of the season. The Mountaineers were whistled for a foul above the box on a shot by forward Ally Griffin. Denesik placed her kick toward the far-right post.
TTU's goal is only the third allowed by Mountaineer sophomore
Rylee Foster in Big 12 play this season. She made two saves for her second career draw and first since her WVU debut in a 1-1 (2OT) tie at No. 2 Penn State on Aug. 19, 2016.
Zucchetto finished with eight saves, four in the first half.
"Texas Tech played us different," Izzo-Brown added. "They were playing for the counter and played with a lot of numbers behind the ball. We have to stick with our routine and repetition, and we have to understand that we have to be able to finish those chances we didn't finish tonight."
WVU's best chance in extra time came just four minutes into the first overtime. Senior midfielder
Carla Portillo pushed the ball up to junior forward Sh'Nia Gordon, and she quickly gave chase before taking a shot from 12-yards out that was tipped away by Zucchetto for the Mountaineers' 12th and final corner kick of the match.
Pierre-Louis had a chance for her second golden goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime, but her shot above the box pinged off the crossbar.
With the match freshly tied, WVU earned a slew of chances in the 72nd minute. Senior forward
Heather Kaleiohi had two close shots blocked, including one at the right post, and Pierre-Louis again saw a shot slam off the crossbar before senior forward
Michaela Abam's shot in the 76th minute was stopped. The frenzy ended with an in-traffic shot from freshman forward
Lauren Segalla that was blocked away near the penalty line.
Foster made her first of two saves in the 83rd minute, catching a close header by Jade King inside the six-yard box. Her second save came three minutes later, as she easily caught a free kick from midfielder Mary Heiberger at the goal line.
Abam finished with a game-high nine shots, with a match-best three landing on-frame. The Houston native's best chance came in the 14th minute. Juniors
Vanessa Flores and
Grace Cutler connected on a through ball. Cutler immediately crossed it into the box, where a waiting Abam swiftly took a shot near the six-yard line. Zucchetto stood her ground for the save.
Forward Ally Griffin paced TTU with five shots.
WVU continues to own a 5-2-1 edge in the all-time series with the Red Raiders.
