No. 7 Mountaineers Face Cyclones Friday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 7-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team faces Iowa State in its lone contest of the weekend on Friday, Oct. 13, with kick from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium set for 7 p.m.

Fans who wear their Halloween costumes to the match will be admitted for free, and superhero masks will be handed out to all youths under 13. Additionally, all Girl Scouts in attendance also will receive free admission.

Tickets for Friday night's match are on sale now at WVUGAME.com and also will be available for purchase at the stadium ticket office. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths under 13 and senior citizens and $2 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students are admitted free with a valid WVU Student I.D.

To provide a safer environment for Mountaineer fans and to expedite entry into all ticketed WVU athletic events, the West Virginia University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics enforces the NFL's Clear Bag Policy. The athletic department invites and encourages fans to visit WVUsports.com/clearbag for more information, to view pictures of permissible and non-permissible items and to obtain answers to frequently asked questions about the clear bag policy.

The Mountaineers (11-3, 4-1) carry a 36-match unbeaten streak against conference opponents at home into Friday night. The streak is the third-longest active streak in the nation. WVU also has won 19 straight home Big 12 Conference games, the second-longest streak in conference history, and is unbeaten in 22 straight home Big 12 matches. A win Friday would give WVU the longest home unbeaten streak against conference foes in Big 12 history.

"Our captains and the team leadership understand what's at stake in conference play," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We know every team in the Big 12 is going to be tough. We just have to continue to take care of the ball and take care of West Virginia soccer."

WVU is 5-0 against ISU and has denied the Cyclones (2-10-2, 0-4-1) a goal in the last four matches. The Mountaineers have outscored ISU, 14-2, since the teams' first meeting in 2012.

In their last meeting, the Mountaineers earned a 2-0 victory at Iowa State on Oct. 9, 2016, at Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa. Senior forward Michaela Abam assisted on classmate Carla Portillo's game-winner in the 14th minute, and defender Kadeisha Buchanan added an insurance goal 13 minutes later. Sophomore Rylee Foster made two saves for the shutout.

WVU cruised to a 4-0 win in their last meeting in Morgantown on Oct. 18, 2015. Abam, senior Heather Kaleiohi and junior Hannah Abraham added insurance goals following Kailey Utley's game-winner in the 25th minute, and Hannah Steadman made two saves.

The Mountaineer offense came alive in the team's last outing, a 5-1 win over Oklahoma on Oct. 8, at Dick Dlesk Stadium. Abam, the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, scored the team's first goal in the 19th minute and assisted on Kaleiohi's goal 39 seconds later. Five different Mountaineers factored into the scoring, with insurance goals coming from freshman forward Lauren Segalla, junior defender Bianca St. Georges and freshman midfielder Issy Coombes, her first career score.

"The girls have been working really hard with our final-third passing and finishing," Izzo-Brown added. "I was pleased five went into the back of the net Sunday. I just hope that continues and momentum moves us into Friday's game."

WVU finished with a 21-5 shot advantage, and freshman Kayla Thompson, in relief of Foster, made one save. OU's goal came in the 88th minute. The Mountaineer backline also denied the Sooners a corner kick, the fifth opponent and second in league play to not earn a chance against WVU.

The WVU offense ranks No. 3 in the Big 12 with a 1.64 goals/game average. Abam paces the team with four goals and ranks No. 9 in the Big 12, while junior forward Sh'Nia Gordon shows a team-best seven helpers, a career single-season high, which ranks No. 2 in the conference. Abam (4 G, 3 A) and Gordon (2 G, 7 A) pace WVU and rank No. 7 in the Big 12 with a 0.79 points/game average.

Foster shows a 0.640 goals-against average (GAA) and ranks No. 4 in the Big 12, No. 37 nationally. She and the WVU backline have posted eight shutouts this season.

ISU played to back-to-back overtime matches last weekend in Ames, earning a 0-0 (2OT) draw against Oklahoma on Oct. 6 before dropping a 2-1 (OT) decision to No. 19 Oklahoma State on Oct. 8. Sophomore Antonia Reyes made 13 combined saves. Against OSU, senior midfielder Stella Strohman tallied the equalizer in the 29th minute, her first goal of the year.

Junior forward Klasey Medelberg paces ISU with six points on a team-best three goals. Reyes has started the last three matches in net for the Cyclones and ranks No. 10 in the Big 12 with a 1.31 GAA.
