WVU Heads to Oklahoma for Big 12 Duals

STILLWATER, Okla. – The West Virginia University wrestling team embarks on its Big 12 schedule this weekend as the Mountaineers (2-8) travel to Oklahoma for a pair of league duals. The team starts off in Stillwater where it will face No. 1 Oklahoma State on Friday in an 8 p.m. ET tilt at Gallagher-Iba Arena before heading to Norman on Sunday for a 1 p.m. ET matchup with No. 15 Oklahoma at McCasland Field House.
Live stats for both duals will be provided on TrackWrestling. Friday’s dual with the Cowboys will be available to subscribers at FloWrestling, while Sunday’s match with the Sooners will be on FOX Sports Oklahoma and FOX College Sports Pacific. Chad McKee and Jack Spates will be on the call.
“We look forward to kicking off the Big 12 duals season with OSU and OU,” said WVU head coach Sammie Henson. “We have had a solid week of prep after a good weekend in Pittsburgh, and the men are hungry to wrestle. These are two tough teams, and we will have to bring our A-game.”
The Mountaineers and the Cowboys (6-0, 1-0) meet for the 12th time on Friday in a series that dates back to 1927. Oklahoma State owns an 11-0 lead in the series and took a 38-3 win in Morgantown last season as the No. 5 team in the nation. The Cowboys have taken five wins in league action.
WVU and OU (5-4) square off in the eighth all-time meeting on Sunday. The Sooners lead the series, 6-1, with five of those wins coming after the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 in 2012. The two first met in 1986, with West Virginia claiming a 30-15 win at a neutral site. The Sooners won last season's dual in Morgantown by a score of 23-11.
The Mountaineers posted a 22-20 win over Binghamton last weekend, marking the program's 600th all-time win since 1921. Cory Stainbrook's pin at 133 led the way, along with tech. falls from Devin Brown (125) and Dylan Cottrell (165).
Freshman Dayton Garrett returns to his home state for the first time in his collegiate career. The freshman from Tuttle, Oklahoma, competes at 157 pounds for WVU. Garrett recently picked up his first career bonus-point win last week with a pin of Harvard’s Zeth Dean.
First-year starter Christian Monserrat (149) and fourth-year starter Stainbrook (133) continue to lead the Mountaineers. Each went 2-1 at last weekend's Pitt Duals as they remain tied for the team lead with 11 wins. Monserrat is 11-5 on the season and 7-3 in duals, while Stainbrook is 11-7 with a 6-4 mark in dual matches. Stainbrook's pin against Binghamton ties him with Monserrat for the team lead in wins by fall this season with three. Monserrat boasts four bonus-point victories with three pins and a major decision, while Brown and Cottrell lead the team with a pair of tech. falls each.
