MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Jan. 17, 2016) – Jacob A. Smith went 3-0 at 197 while Dylan Cottrell posted a 2-1 mark at 165 pounds as the two remain nationally ranked following the West Virginia University wrestling team’s outing at the Pitt Duals on Saturday.
Smith defeated No. 14 Ryan Wolfe of Rider in a 5-4 decision and earned a 6-1 win over Mark Tracy of Binghamton before winning by forfeit against Harvard. He remains ranked at No. 6 by both InterMat and FloWrestling and is No. 10 according to The Open Mat. Smith is 10-4 overall and 7-2 in duals this season. He’s currently on a five-match win streak.
Cottrell tech. falled Binghamton’s Jake Einbinder, 19-2, in the first period and pinned Harvard’s Peter Bearse midway through the second period. He lost a tough 7-4 decision to No. 5 Chad Walsh of Rider in just his second setback of the season. Cottrell remains at No. 8 via InterMat and has moved to No. 10 on FloWrestling’s rankings at 165. He has returned to The Open Mat’s rankings, where he sits at No. 13.
West Virginia (2-8, 0-0) heads to Oklahoma for a pair of Big 12 duals this weekend. The Mountaineers will face No. 1 Oklahoma State on Friday in an 8 p.m. ET tilt at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater before heading to Norman on Sunday to take on No. 15 Oklahoma at 1 p.m. ET at McCasland Field House.
