MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team has moved into the top 20 in both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Soccer America polls.
The Mountaineers (6-1-1) No. 17 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll and No. 20 in this week’s Soccer America rankings. Additionally, it was announced yesterday that WVU is No. 15 in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 and ranked No. 18 by College Soccer News.
WVU moved into the NSCAA poll for the first time this season, while it has been ranked in the Soccer America Top 25 each of the last five weeks.
The No. 15 Top Drawer Soccer ranking is WVU’s highest ranking by a national poll since September 6, 2011, when the Mountaineers were No. 12. West Virginia’s last top-25 ranking also came in 2011, at No. 21 on November 1.
West Virginia is off to its best start to a season since 2006, when the Mountaineers began the year 6-0-2.
Undefeated in its last seven matches, WVU is riding a school-record seven-match shutout streak. Junior goalkeeper Jose Santos, who was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week earlier today, leads the nation in save percentage (.923) and goals-against average (.215). He has not allowed a goal in more than 705 minutes, since the first half of WVU’s season-opening game against No. 9 Seattle.
The Mountaineers have been ranked in at least one poll for five consecutive weeks, following a win over No. 7 Georgetown on opening weekend. Before this week, WVU’s highest ranking was No. 22, in the Soccer America poll.
The Mountaineers return home to begin their final four-match homestand of the season against St. Mary’s (Calif.) on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is set for noon ET, and admission is free for all fans, courtesy of WVU Medicine.
