September 13, 2016 12:33 PM | Women's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Juniors Michaela Abam and Amandine Pierre-Louis of the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team collected three weekly honors today, including two Big 12 Conference awards.
Abam, a forward, was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, while Pierre-Louis, an outside back, was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, Abam was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.
Oklahoma State’s Jaci Jones was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week. The Mountaineers and the Cowgirls have each earned a league-best three honors this season.
Today’s awards mark the first time this season two Mountaineers have earned Big 12 honors in the same week. Previously, senior Kadeisha Buchanan was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 30.
A Houston native, today’s honor is the third career award for Abam, a 2016 Preseason All-Big 12 honoree. Pierre-Louis, a native of Montreal, Quebec, was previously named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 28, 2014.
Abam’s recognition follows a two-goal performance in the second half of the Mountaineers’ 3-1 victory at then-No. 5 Duke on Sept. 9. A goal in the 50th minute gave WVU its first two-goal lead of the night. After the Blue Devils cut into the advantage in the 66th minute, Abam added an insurance goal in the 80th minute on a penalty kick, WVU’s first of the season. The game-winner was her first of the season, as was the two-score effort. Abam paces the team with nine points (4 G, 1 A). She ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 in goals and No. 7 in points.
Pierre-Louis not only gave WVU the lead for good Friday night, but she also helped the WVU backline hold Duke to a season-low eight shots, with three on-goal, also a season low. The Blue Devils were held to a season-low one shot in the first half. The WVU defense has held its opponents, including four ranked teams, to just four goals all year. Pierre-Louis tallied her second goal of the season in the 38th minute on a blast from 20-yards out. She ranks second on the team with six points (2 G, 2 A).
Riding a six-match win streak, the Mountaineers (6-0-1) return to Morgantown this weekend to close their home nonconference schedule at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU opens against Princeton (6-0) on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. The Mountaineers will then play host to No. 9 Georgetown (6-1) on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m.
Friday is Olympic Night, and fans wearing their country’s favorite colors will receive free admission. Additionally, it’s WVU Faculty/Staff Night, and all WVU faculty and staff members also will receive free admission with a valid WVU Staff I.D.
Sunday is Youth Soccer Day, and all youths under the age of 13 who wear a youth soccer jersey will receive free admittance. A free soccer clinic will follow the match, weather permitting.
Tickets for both matches are available now at WVUGAME.com. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths under the age of 13 and senior citizens, and $2 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students are admitted free with a valid WVU Student I.D.
