MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Canada left little to wonder in its second group match at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, as the squad easily moved past Zimbabwe, 3-1, this afternoon at Arena Corinthians, in São Paulo, Brazil.
West Virginia University women’s soccer seniors Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence again played the full 90 minutes for Canada. Buchanan, a native of Brampton, Ontario, finished with two shots, one on-goal. She was given a yellow card in the 59th minute, putting her tournament total at two, and must sit out the team’s next match against No. 2-ranked Germany on Tuesday. After that game, her yellow cards will be erased.
Former Texas Tech player Janine Beckie tallied two goals, including the game’s first in the seventh minute. Team captain Christine Sinclair scored the game-winner in the 19th minute. The duo has combined for all five of Canada’s goals through the tournament’s first two games.
Canada concluded group play against Germany on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 3 p.m. ET, at Manè Garrincha Stadium in Brasilla, Brazil.
