MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two weekend wins, including a commanding victory against a top-10 opponent, helped push the West Virginia University women’s soccer team up to No. 4 in today’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s Top 25 Poll.
The position is the Mountaineers’ (3-0-1) best ranking to date this season. WVU was ranked No. 6 in last week’s TDS.com Poll. The squad has not been as high as No. 4 in any poll since sitting at No. 4 in the Nov. 10, 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women’s Rankings.
Stanford (3-0) and Florida State (3-0) continue to rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Virginia (4-0) is up one spot to No. 3, and Duke (3-1) is down two spots to No. 5.
Penn State (1-1-1) ranks No. 6 and is followed by North Carolina (3-0) and Rutgers (3-0-1) at No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Clemson (3-1) and Florida (3-1) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers continue to be the lone ranked Big 12 Conference team.
WVU opened its 2016 home season at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium with two victories, defeating then-No. 8 Clemson, 1-0, on Aug. 26, and Saint Francis, 3-1, on Aug. 28. The win against the Tigers gave the Mountaineers at least one victory over a top-10 team in each of the last 12 years. Additionally, the two victories pushed WVU’s home unbeaten streak to 27.
The Mountaineers stay at home and play host to two Big Ten Conference opponents this weekend. WVU opens the holiday weekend against Purdue on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., and concludes its homestand against No. 19 Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m.
All tickets for Thursday’s match are available for $1 each. Tickets for Sunday’s match are $5 for adults, $3 for youths under the age of 13 and $2 for groups of 10 or more. Tickets are available for purchase now at WVUGAME.com.
WVU students are admitted free all weekend with a valid WVU Student I.D.
