MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team is ranked No. 6 in the 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women’s Preseason Ranking, released this evening just hours before the start of the team’s 2016 preseason camp.
The Mountaineers’ position is the team’s highest preseason ranking and one spot better than its 2015 season-ending ranking of No. 7. An NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist in 2015, the Mountaineers were ranked No. 12 in last season’s preseason poll.
WVU, the four-time defending Big 12 Conference champion, is the highest-ranked league team. Texas Tech follows at No. 19.
Florida State ranks No. 1. Defending National Champion Penn State is No. 2, with Duke following at No. 3, Virginia at No. 4 and Stanford at No. 5.
Florida sits behind WVU at No. 7, and Texas A&M, North Carolina and Rutgers round out the top 10.
Five of the Mountaineers’ 2016 opponents are preseason ranked: No. 2 PSU, No. 3 Duke, No. 14 Clemson, No. 19 TTU and No. 23 Ohio State.
WVU was ranked in the top five of the NSCAA Poll in each of the last 10 weeks of the 2015 season. The Mountaineers reached as high as a program-best No. 2 and held the position for two weeks.
The squad opens its 2016 preseason camp on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Dreamswork Field. Eighteen letterwinners return, including senior All-Americans Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence; the duo is currently competing for Canada at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. They will join seniors Carly Black and Ashley Woolpert in leading WVU in defense of its four straight Big 12 titles.
The Mountaineers compiled a record of 19-3-1 in 2015 and set program season records in wins (19), shutouts (15) and goals (61).
