Morgantown, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior quarterback Skyler Howard was named to the Manning Award and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch Lists, today, as announced by the supporting organizations.
This marks the fifth watch list Howard has been named to as he was named to the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback, Wuerffel Trophy and the Allstate American Football Coaches’ Association Good Works Team Watch Lists.
The Manning Award Watch List, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, includes 30 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2016 season. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates’ bowl performance in its balloting.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, given by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce, recognizes the top offensive player in Division 1 football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
The Watch List announced today will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to 5 finalists in December. They will be selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and the previous winner. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for January 11, 2017.
Last season, Howard completed 221-of-403 passes for 3,145 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was the Cactus Bowl Offensive MVP after throwing for 532 yards and five touchdowns in the 43-42 win over Arizona State, marking the second most passing yards in a game in WVU history. Howard’s 3,647 yards of total offense ranked No. 3 in school history and his 3,145 passing yards ranked as fifth best in season history.
Howard graduated in August 2015 with his bachelor’s degree in communications studies and is currently working on a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications.
