Maxwell and Bednarik Awards Announce Watch Lists

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University football senior quarterback Skyler Howard was named today to the watch list for the 80th annual Maxwell Award, and senior defensive lineman Noble Nwachukwu was named to the 22nd annual Bednarik Award Watch List, as announced by the Maxwell Football Club.
The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell, has been given to America's College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell's contributions to the game of football were extensive, including time as a player, a sportswriter and an official. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. Chuck Bednarik, former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Last season, Howard completed 221-of-403 passes for 3,145 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was the Cactus Bowl Offensive MVP after throwing for 532 yards and five touchdowns in the 43-42 win over Arizona State, marking the second most passing yards in a game in WVU history. Howard’s 3,647 yards of total offense ranked No. 3 in school history and his 3,145 passing yards ranked as fifth best in season history.
Nwachukwu, the Big12 Conference’s returning sack leader in conference games only, finished with 47 tackles, including 37 solo stops and a team-leading 8.5 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss. He was ranked No. 5 in sacks and No. 12 in tackles for loss and he was No. 2 in sacks and No. 3 in tackles for loss in conference games only
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced October 31, 2016, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled November 21, 2016. The winners of the 2016 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 8, 2016. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 10, 2017.
