MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Rising West Virginia University seniors Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence helped the Canadian Women’s Soccer National Team split its Road to Rio Women’s International Series with Brazil.
The Canadians dropped the series opener, 2-0, on June 4, at BMO Field in Toronto. The squad bounced back with a 1-0 extra time victory last night at TD Place in Ottawa.
Lawrence, a midfielder when playing for the Mountaineers, was moved to left fullback Saturday evening, and her efforts were immediately acknowledged, as she was named the player of the match for Canada.
“She was tested defensively tonight, against world-class wingers,” Canada coach John Herman said following the match. “She showed her pace in the recovery and for the next game she will be challenged to get forward more, and we will be looking to get her into situations where she can be a real threat.”
The Canadians bounced back with a 1-0 victory Tuesday night, as Janine Beckie, a recent Texas Tech graduate, scored with just seconds remaining.
Total attendance at the two home friendlies was 52,172.
The squad will gather for its last home camp in July before traveling to France for an international friendly in the final stages of Olympic preparation.
Canada will face Australia, Zimbabwe and Germany in the group stage of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics beginning Aug. 3, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
