Mountaineers in the Pros Update – May 11

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Just over a month into the Major League Baseball season, 15 former West Virginia University baseball players are on active rosters. Jedd Gyorko is representing the Mountaineers in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals, while 10 players are in the minor leagues. Another two are in extended spring training, one is in the Independent League and another, Dustin Nippert, is playing in the Korean Baseball Organization.
Bobby Boyd – Lancaster JetHawks (Advanced-A, Houston Astros)
Bobby Boyd has made 20 appearances for the Lancaster JetHawks. He recorded a season-high three hits and scored three runs on May 7. Boyd leads the California League with 14 stolen bases and is currently second on the JetHawks with 18 runs scored.
Sean Carley – Extended Spring Training, New York Yankees
Sean Carley is currently in extended spring training with the New York Yankees.
David Carpenter – Salt Lake Bees (Triple-A, Los Angeles Angels)
David Carpenter signed with the Los Angeles Angels on May 10 and will report to the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees. Carpenter began the year with the Atlantic League’s Bridgeport Bluefish of the Independent League.
Billy Fleming – Tampa Yankees (Advanced-A, New York Yankees)
Billy Fleming has made 28 appearances with the Tampa Yankees in the 2016 campaign. He drove in a season-high four runs on three hits on May 5. Fleming currently ranks second on the team with 35 hits and third with 17 RBIs.
Justin Fox – Washington Wild Things (Independent)
Justin Fox and the Washington Wild Things begin Independent League play against Gateway on May 13, 2016.
Jedd Gyorko – St. Louis Cardinals (MLB)
Jedd Gyorko is in his fourth MLB season and his first with the St. Louis Cardinals. He has played in 26 games in 2016 with 18 starts. Gyorko hit a home run and recorded a season-high three hits in two consecutive games against his former team, the San Diego Padres, on April 23 and 24. In the 2016 season, Gyorko is hitting .211 with 16 hits, four home runs, nine RBIs and nine runs scored.
Garrett Hope – Extended Spring Training, Los Angeles Dodgers
Garrett Hope is currently in extended spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ryan McBroom – Dunedin Blue Jays (Advanced-A, Toronto Blue Jays)
Ryan McBroom has appeared in a team-high 31 games for the Dunedin Blue Jays. He drove in a season- best two runs on May 9. With 121 at-bats, he currently leads the Blue Jays and is fourth in the Florida State League. McBroom also leads the team in RBIs with 16 on the year.
John Means – Frederick Keys (Advanced-A, Baltimore Orioles)
John Means owns a 3-0 record in six starts for the Frederick Keys. With a 2.57 ERA, he leads the Keys in wins and innings pitched, with 31.0. Means struck out a career-high 10 batters in just 6.0 innings on May 5.
Taylor Munden – Batavia Muckdogs (Single-A, Miami Marlins)
In his second professional season, Taylor Munden appeared in 21 games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers before being assigned to the Batavia Muckdogs on May 9. With the Grasshoppers, Munden drove in two runs and scored a pair on April 30.
Harrison Musgrave – Hartford Yard Goats (Double-A, Colorado Rockies)
Harrison Musgrave leads the Hartford Yard Goats with five wins in five starts. He struck out a season high eight batters on May 4 and allowed four hits with six strikeouts in 7.0 innings on May 9 against the Bowie Baysox. Musgrave ranks second in the Eastern League with a 1.30 ERA.
Dustin Nippert – Doosan Bears (Korean Baseball Organization)
Dustin Nippert is in his sixth season with the Doosan Bears in the Korean Baseball Organization. He has started seven games and owns a 6-1 record with a 2.53 ERA. He tossed 6.2 shutout innings and struck out nine on May 1. In 42.2 innings this season, he has 55 strikeouts and has allowed 41 hits and 12 earned runs.
Cam O’Brien – GCL Blue Jays (Rookie League, Toronto Blue Jays)
Cam O’Brien and the GCL Blue Jays open play in the Gulf Coast League in June.
John Polonius – Augusta GreenJackets (Single-A, San Francisco Giants)
John Polonius is in his fifth professional season and has not seen action in 2016 for the Augusta GreenJackets. He is currently on the seven-day disabled list.
Corey Walter – Midland RockHounds (Double-A, Oakland Athletics)
Corey Walter has pitched 21.2 innings in eight appearances for the Midland RockHounds. He picked up a save on April 27 while pitching 3.1 innings and striking out two. Walter has made two starts on the year.
