Mountaineers Open Home Spring Slate

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team opens its 2016 spring season home slate on Sunday, April 10, against Georgetown, at 1:30 p.m., at Dreamswork Field.
Limited seating will be available for fans at Dreamswork Field. Parking will be available in the empty parking lot at the former Shoney’s location behind the practice facility. Fans are encouraged to take the steps behind the facility that lead from the road to the practice field.
“We’re excited to play Georgetown,” assistant coach Marisa Kanela said. “This is a matchup between two NCAA qualifying teams. We’ll meet in the fall, too, so that adds to the excitement around this game.”
The Mountaineers look to bounce back from consecutive 3-0 losses on the road, including a 3-0 defeat at Pitt on April 3.
“The girls have been preparing all week for Georgetown,” Kanela added. “The team wants to work on the defensive organization that needed sorted out after our first two spring games. The defense’s goal is to get a shutout this game and eliminate some of the opportunities our opponents have capitalized on. Organization will be key defensively as a unit so we can transition properly on offense.
“From an attacking standpoint, our team has really played well in front of the net this week; finishing opportunities will be key. We’re hoping to put a few on the scoreboard. Overall, we need to play for 90 minutes. We’ve come out strong each game, but maintaining that pressure throughout the course of the game is critical.”
WVU finished with six shots on-goal against the Panthers. Pitt also registered six shots on-frame, with sophomore Michelle Newhouse making three saves.
