MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Jacob A. Smith of the West Virginia University wrestling team will have two seasons of eligibility remaining after being granted a waiver by the NCAA this spring.
Smith was officially granted a hardship waiver for the 2013-14 season while enrolled at Cleveland State. He will be eligible to compete in both 2016-17 and 2017-18 for WVU, and will be listed as a redshirt junior next season.
A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Smith is a two-time NCAA qualifier for the Mountaineers. He spent the majority of the 2015-16 ranked inside the top 10 at 197 pounds and entered the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships as the No. 13 seed. Smith complied a 29-12 record in 2015-16 and is 55-25 in two seasons at WVU.
“We believe that Jake not only deserved this, but that he will utilize the extra year to prove to the nation he is among the elite,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “He is a Mountaineer from birth and will continue to bring pride and accolades to the WVU family.”
