Mountaineers Raise Funds for BPBCC
March 24, 2016 02:53 PM | Women's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – It has been a busy March for the West Virginia University women’s soccer team. Despite playing just one spring match so far, a 3-0 loss at the Western New York Flash on March 19, the team has been hard at work raising funds for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
The team opened the month with its annual 4-versus-4 tournament “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” event on March 5, at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility. The Mountaineers raised $5,350 for the center at the tournament. The squad will continue to raise funds throughout the spring.
“Our 4-versus-4 breast cancer fundraiser was another huge success because of the participation of our soccer community and the enthusiasm and dedication the team has to the cause,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Our players embrace the opportunity to help fundraise, and they always enjoy the day with our soccer fans.
“(Assistant coach) Marisa Kanela and (Director of Operations) Theo Egbele did a great job putting the tournament together. Along with the help of Amy Hile, our athletic trainer, our players and entire staff, we truly enjoyed a great event.”
Open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, as well as an open division for college age students and adults, each team of three players was paired with a WVU women’s soccer student-athlete or Mountaineer coach.
The WVU women’s soccer program has raised more than $100,000 for the center over the last decade.

Juniors Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence recently helped the Canadian Women’s National Team capture the 2016 Algarve Cup with a 2-1 win over Brazil on March 9, in Lagos, Portugal.
Lawrence assisted on the game’s first score, a goal by Shelina Zadorsky.
Following the championship win, Buchanan received her FIFPro Women’s World XI Team award. This is the first year the honor was awarded, and the honorees were selected by the athletes themselves.
Buchanan and Lawrence are currently training with the National Team and will not be available for any of the Mountaineers’ spring games.

The Mountaineers are currently enjoying Spring Break. The team returns to the road next weekend, as WVU will face Pitt on Sunday, April 3, at 3 p.m., at the Petersen Sports Complex.
The team opens its home spring season against Georgetown on Saturday, April 9, at 1:30 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. It is the first of only two home spring games this season for the Mountaineers. WVU also will play at DDSS on Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m., against NCAA Tournament third-round participant Ohio State.
