MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women’s soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown announced today that forward Grace Cutler will transfer from Santa Clara and join the Mountaineers for the 2016 season.
A rising sophomore from Fort Collins, Colorado, Cutler will have three years of eligibility remaining at WVU.
“When Grace visited campus, we saw an immediate fit with her and our team,” Izzo-Brown said. “The team embraced her right away, and I know she’ll add to the chemistry of our WVU family.
“Grace’s soccer ability and experience up top will be a great addition. We lost our top scorer in Kailey Utley, and Grace had six goals as an impactful, attacking freshman at Santa Clara. We look forward to her contributing leadership in our forward line.”
Cutler saw time in all 22 of the Broncos’ 2015 matches and earned the starting nod in 11. She finished second on the team with 13 points, including six goals, also the second-best team total. Cutler’s first goal came in her first collegiate game, a 2-0 win at UC Davis on Aug. 21. Her second career goal came against a Big 12 opponent, as she added an insurance score in a 2-0 win against Oklahoma on Sept. 11. She closed the month of September with a two-goal effort in a 4-0 win at UC Irvine on Sept. 25.
Cutler’s lone assist of the season came on the team’s game-winner in a double-overtime, 3-2 victory at Gonzaga on Nov. 7. She also tallied the game-winner in the Broncos’ 1-0 victory over Long Beach State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14.
Cutler was named the conference Player of the Year as a junior at Fossil Ridge High in 2014 and also was a nominee for the Gatorade Player of the Year. She led the SaberCats to an undefeated league record that year and earned First Team All-State accolades. As a sophomore, she led Fossil Ridge to the semifinals in postseason play and was named the Second Team All-State Team. Cutler also was an all-conference honoree in track as a freshman and sophomore. A member of the National Honor Society, she graduated early from Fossil Ridge and enrolled at Santa Clara in January 2015.
A member of the 2014 Elite Clubs National League (ECNL) Player Development Program (PDP), Cutler was the No. 5-ranked scorer for all U17 girls during the 2013-14 ECNL regular season. She attended the United States Soccer Federation Training Centers in 2013 and 2014. She also played club soccer for Real Colorado.
The daughter of Trey and Jenice Cutler, she will major in communications.
