WVU Travels to Penn State Tuesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team continues a seven game roadtrip with a midweek contest at Penn State on Tuesday, March 22.
First pitch between the Mountaineers (10-7) and Nittany Lions (7-10) is set for 6:30 p.m. ET, at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in University Park, Pa.

Freshman right-hander Tanner Campbell will get the start for the Mountaineers, his third of the season. He is 1-0 on the year with a 2.61 ERA in 10.1 innings of work. Last time out, Campbell earned his first win with a four-hit, one-run outing in 6.0 innings against Radford on March 15. He struck out six and walked three.
Senior lefty Nick Hedge will start for the Nittany Lions. He is 1-1 on the season in three appearances. In 10.0 innings of work, Hedge owns a 1.80 ERA and has allowed two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

SCOUTING PENN STATE
Penn State is 7-10 on the season and 2-1 at home. The Nittany Lions have rebounded from a tough start to their season, winning five of their last eight games after opening the year with seven losses in their first nine games.
PSU is coming off a series victory over Niagara in the Nittany Lions’ home opener. After a 4-3 loss to open the series, Penn State posted a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, 4-1 and 16-4.
The Nittany Lions are led by Rob Cooper, in his third season in Happy Valley. Cooper is 43-72 at PSU and 327-302 in his career.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE NITTANY LIONS
Tuesday marks the 109th meeting between West Virginia and Penn State. One of three opponents WVU has faced off against more than 100 times, the two teams first met in 1904, a 9-5 loss in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers are 41-67 all-time against the Nittany Lions and 0-2 under fourth-year coach Randy Mazey. Penn State won last year’s matchup, 5-3 at Monongalia County Ballpark. In 2014, PSU earned an 8-4 win in University Park, Pa.
ON DECK: AT KANSAS
Big 12 Conference play continues this weekend when WVU travels to take on Kansas in a three-game series beginning on March 25. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. ET on Friday, March 25 in the opener before a 5 p.m. ET contest on Saturday and a 2 p.m. ET series finale on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT: WVU DROPS SERIES AT #7 TCU
WVU opened Big 12 action with a challenging road series at No. 7 TCU. The Horned Frogs came back for a 10-6 win on Friday before 7-1 and 14-2 victories on Saturday and Sunday.
In the opener, WVU jumped out to a 2-0 lead and extended it to 3-0 and 6-3, but TCU rallied late with seven runs in the eighth. Junior starter Chad Donato held TCU to two earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work as sophomore Shaun Corso drove in two runs for the second consecutive game. On Saturday, WVU was held to just two hits in a 7-1 loss as the Mountaineers lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. In Sunday’s series finale, TCU earned a 14-2, seven-inning victory as freshman Marques Inman drove in both WVU runs with a single in the first inning.
