FORT WORTH, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team lost the series finale at No. 7 TCU, 14-2, on Sunday afternoon in a seven-inning contest.
In front of 4,190 fans at Lupton Stadium, the Mountaineers (10-7, 0-3 Big 12) were held to two runs on eight hits with two errors. The Horned Frogs (16-3, 3-0) scored 14 runs, 13 earned, on 16 hits with no errors.
Freshman designated hitter Marques Inman drove in both WVU runs with a single in the first inning, and fellow freshman Darius Hill had two hits on the day to lead the Mountaineers offensively.
For the 11th time this season, the Mountaineers scored first, with a pair of runs in the opening inning. West Virginia took a 2-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning, but TCU answered with a grand slam by freshman Luken Baker. TCU scored four runs, three of them earned, on three hits in the inning.
WVU sophomore right-handed starter BJ Myers exited after one inning on the mound, the shortest outing of his career.
The Horned Frogs extended their lead to 5-2 in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. The advantage became 7-2 after a solo home run and an RBI groundout in the third.
TCU opened the game up with a five run fourth inning to take a 12-2 lead. Five runs scored on four hits with one WVU error. The Horned Frogs added two in the fifth with a double and a sacrifice fly.
Two reached for West Virginia in the sixth inning, but WVU could not get a run across. After Hill led off the inning with a single, junior first baseman Jackson Cramer singled through the right side. The hit extended Cramer’s streak of reaching base to 37 consecutive games.
In relief for the Mountaineers on the mound, sophomore Shane Ennis and senior Blake Smith each worked an inning and allowed just one hit a piece. Ennis came in with no outs in the fifth and got the final three outs of the frame, while Smith worked the sixth.
WVU stays on the road for a midweek contest at Penn State on Tuesday, March 22. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET in State College, Pa.
