FORT WORTH, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team was held to just two hits in a 7-1 loss at No. 7 TCU on Saturday afternoon.
In front of 4,364 fans at TCU’s Lupton Stadium, the Mountaineers (10-6, 0-2 Big 12) lost back-to-back games for the first time this season. The Horned Frogs (15-3, 2-0) recorded seven runs on 10 hits. WVU had three errors, which led to two unearned runs. TCU did not commit an error.
Senior left-hander Ross Vance got the start for the Mountaineers and threw 4.0 innings allowing five runs, three of them earned, on seven hits. Vance struck out five and walked three.
For the Horned Frogs, righty Brian Howard threw seven innings of two-hit, one run ball. He struck out eight and walked three. In relief, righty Preston Guillory did not allow a hit in the final two innings.
Sophomore third baseman Kyle Davis posted a hit and scored WVU’s run. He extended his hit streak to a career-high 14 games and has reached base in 34 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak on the team behind junior Jackson Cramer, who has reached safely in 36 games in a row.
Sophomore designated hitter Shaun Corso also had a hit on Saturday to extend his hit streak to a career-best six games.
After both teams stranded a pair of baserunners in the first inning, the Horned Frogs got on the board with a run in the second. Following a leadoff single by TCU’s Elliott Barzilli and a pair of strikeouts, Barzilli stole second and advanced to third on a WVU throwing error. He scored on a single to give TCU a 1-0 lead.
WVU answered right back with a run in the top of the third inning. Davis roped a one-out double to left-center, and scored on a groundout by freshman right fielder Darius Hill.
The Horned Frogs regained the lead the following inning when they scored after a double and a throwing error by WVU junior catcher Ray Guerrini.
TCU extended its lead to 5-1 with a three-run fourth inning off of Vance. With two runners on and one out, Vance issued an intentional walk before Austen Wade hit a two-out single to center field. One run scored on the play before another run crossed the plate on a WVU throwing error.
Junior righty Brandon Boone entered the game to begin the fifth inning and shut down the Horned Frogs in order. After a 1-2-3 top of the sixth for WVU, TCU added a run thanks to a two-out single with two runners on.
TCU added a run in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead. WVU drew a pair of walks in the ninth inning, but a strikeout ended the game without the Mountaineers cutting into the deficit.
