MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following the conclusion of the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship Texas on Feb. 21, West Virginia University juniors Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence were named to the Best XI Team.
Selected by the Technical Study Group, the team featured eight athletes from the champion United States and three from runner-up Canada.
Buchanan, a defender, and Lawrence, a midfielder, helped the Canadian Women’s National Team post a 4-1 record at the championship and qualify for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. The squad clinched its bid with a 3-1 win over Costa Rica at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston on Feb. 19. The team then fell to the United States, 2-0, yesterday in the final, with the duo each playing the full 90 minutes.
Lawrence finished the tournament with seven points (3 G, 1 A), while Buchanan tallied two points (1 G).
The Mountaineer pair return to competition with the Canadian Women’s National Team at the 2016 Algarve Cup in Portugal. Playing in Group A, Canada will meet Denmark on March 2, Belgium on March 4 and Iceland on March 7, with the final set for March 9.
