Mountaineers Ranked No. 2 in Final Polls

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team is ranked No. 2 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and TopDrawerSoccer.com Women’s Top 25 Polls.
Today’s rankings are the best season-ending positions for the Mountaineers in 21 seasons. The 2016 National Runner-Up, WVU (23-2-2, 8-0) entered the postseason ranked No. 1 in both polls. The team was ranked No. 1 nationally for eight straight weeks. The Mountaineers earned their first national No. 1 ranking on Sept. 12.
USC (19-4-2, 8-2-1 Pac-12), the 2016 NCAA National Champion, sits atop both polls.
The top five is the same in both polls, with Georgetown (20-3-3, 5-1-2 Big East) sitting at No. 3 and North Carolina (17-4-4, 6-2-2 ACC) and South Carolina (21-2-1, 11-0 SEC) following at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Stanford (18-2-1, 10-1 Pac-12) ranks No. 6 in the NSCAA Poll. Duke (15-5-3, 7-2-1 ACC) sits at No. 7 and is followed by Auburn (17-7, 7-2 SEC) at No. 8. BYU (18-3-1, 6-1-1 WCC) and Florida (17-5-1, 8-3 SEC) round out the top 10.
Duke ranks No. 6 in the TDS.com Poll. Auburn checks in at No. 7, and Santa Clara (12-7-4, 6-2-1 WCC) follows at No. 8. Stanford and BYU round out the top 10.
WVU is the only Big 12 Conference team ranked in the NSCAA Poll. Kansas (11-6-4, 5-1-2) ranks No. 20 in the TDS.com Poll.
In their NCAA College Cup debut, the Mountaineers concluded their historical 2016 season with a 3-1 loss to USC in the College Cup Final on Dec. 4. WVU swept the Big 12 Conference titles for the third time in five years, and the regular-season crown was its fifth straight. The team’s 23 wins are a program record and tied for the most in Big 12 history. WVU posted a nation-best 18 shutouts, a program record and tied for the Big 12 record.
