Elliott Named to All-Region First Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The postseason accolades continue to come in for West Virginia University men’s soccer senior defender Jack Elliott, who has been named to the 2016 All-Great Lakes Region First Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Elliott is WVU’s first all-region honoree since 2014, when Andy Bevin also earned first team accolades.
Elliott was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team on Nov. 22, becoming WVU’s first three-time Academic All-America honoree, and the All-MAC Second Team for the second time in his career on Nov. 10.
“This is a great honor for Jack, who proved himself to be one of the best defenders in the country this year,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “Coupled with his First Team Academic All-America honor, Jack has proven himself both on the field and in the classroom.”
Elliott’s honor is WVU’s 16th NSCAA All-Region accolade in LeBlanc’s 11 seasons in Morgantown, and he is the 10th Mountaineer to be recognized at least once.
While starting all 16 matches, Elliott scored two goals and added an assist for as a senior while anchoring a back line that recorded record-setting numbers. Elliott and the Mountaineers posted eight shutouts in 2016, including a shutout streak that lasted a program-record seven consecutive matches and 758 minutes.
A Management Information Systems major with a 3.96 grade-point average, Elliott played a team-high 1,487 minutes on the pitch.
The regional honor is the latest in a long list of awards for the London native. Along with earning CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team honors in 2016, he was named to the Academic All-America Third Team in 2014 and the Second Team in 2015. He was named to the All-MAC Second Team in 2014 and 2016 and has been recognized as a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete by the Mid-American Conference and has earned Academic All-MAC Team accolades and Academic All-Big 12 honors. He has been named to the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, the President’s List and the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll throughout his career.
Additionally, it was announced on Tuesday that Elliott, senior midfielder Christian Diaz and junior midfielder Jad Arslan were named to the Academic All-MAC Team by the Mid-American Conference.
An All-MAC First Team honoree, Arslan is majoring in business and has a 3.20 GPA. The Roswell, Georgia, native tied for the team lead with four goals and added one assist. He ranked second on the team with nine points and played in all 16 matches with 15 starts. He scored two game-winning goals, at UNCG on Sept. 24 and in WVU’s 3-1 upset victory at No. 22 Akron on Oct. 22, when he notched two scores within eight minutes.
Diaz, who has a 3.81 GPA and is majoring in management, played in 13 games as a senior. The Houston native notched three shots in 277 minutes played while taking six corners, second-most on the team.
