WVU Falls at NIU in Final Minute of Second OT

DEKALB, Ill. – A goal in the final minute of the second overtime gave Northern Illinois a 2-1 victory over the West Virginia University men's soccer team on Saturday night at the NIU Soccer Complex.
In the regular-season finale for both teams, the Mountaineers (8-7-1, 1-4 Mid-American Conference) scored in the 60th minute before the Huskies (2-10-4, 1-3-1 MAC) answered to tie the match in the 80th minute. NIU broke the tie in the second overtime with 53 seconds remaining in the contest.
Senior forward Felix Angerer netted his fourth goal of the season for West Virginia and had two of WVU's 15 shots. Junior midfielder Joey Piatczyc led the team with six shots and three of the Mountaineers' five shots on goal. The WVU defense held NIU to nine shots, five on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jose Santos made three saves while the Huskies' Drew Donnally stopped four West Virginia shots.
Angerer gave WVU a 1-0 lead at 59:02. Freshman defender Logan Lucas sent a long ball in to Angerer alone on goal, who beat the NIU keeper, going between his legs for the score.
The Huskies evened the match at 1-1 at 78:36. The play began with a corner kick, and NIU's first shot attempt hit the post. Off the rebound from inside the six, Christian Molina headed it into the back of the net.
The game-winning goal, at 1:09.07, was scored by Max Voss. On a cross in from Molina, Voss beat Santos on the right side on his second attempt.
The first half saw five shots for the Mountaineers and two for the Huskies. Both teams had one shot on goal.
Lucas had WVU's first shot, with a header off a corner kick by Piatczyc, in the seventh minute, but it went high. Nine minutes later, junior defender Louis Thomas sent a ball in from the near corner, but Angerer couldn't get a clean attempt on a header.
A minute later, NIU recorded its first shot on goal, but the shot by Giovanni Garcia was saved by Santos.
Piatczyc had a long shot in the 22nd minute from 30 yards out, which went high, and junior forward Heath Honold sent a shot in from just outside the box in the 29th minute that was poked away for a save.
NIU closed the first half with a shot in the final minute from outside the box that went high.
The Mountaineers had a strong start to the second half, with several chances off corner kicks, including a long shot in the 53rd minute by Piatczyc that went wide.
Following the two goals, West Virginia's at 59:02 and Northern Illinois' at 78:36, the Mountaineers' best chance to take the lead came in the 87th minute, when Piatczyc fired a clean shot in from just outside the box, but Donnally made a nice save.
West Virginia totaled seven shots in the second half, two on goal. NIU had five shots, one on goal.
In the first overtime, Northern Illinois recorded the lone shot, which Santos saved. WVU had three shots in the second overtime before NIU's lone shot of the second overtime was the winning score.
Piatczyc had a shot from 18 yards out in the 105th minute, but Donnally made the save.
