WVU Takes Commanding Halftime Lead
November 05, 2016 09:07 PM | Football
It took a couple of offensive possessions for West Virginia to figure things out, but once the Mountaineers did they put 31 points on the scoreboard to take a commanding 31-0 lead into the locker room at halftime against Kansas.
Quarterback Skyler Howard used his legs to cross the goal line twice, his first run covering 22 yards and his second going for 33 yards, and he also fired two touchdown passes, one to Daikiel Shorts Jr. for 7 yards and the other for 19 yards to Shelton Gibson right before the end of the half.
As they did in last year’s 48-0 victory in Lawrence, the Mountaineers are doing most of their work on the ground - and also doing it without starting running back Rushel Shell III, who is sitting out tonight’s game with an ankle injury.
True freshman running back Kennedy McKoy shows 92 yards on 10 carries, junior Justin Crawford has rushed seven times for 57 yards and Howard also shows 57 yards on nine attempts.
The WVU ground game has accumulated 231 yards, which is on pace to match last year’s total of 426 yards produced against KU’s defense.
Howard shows 9 completions in 16 attempts for 140 yards and two touchdowns through the air - three of those going to Gibson for 70 yards.
Kansas, which is searching for its first conference road win in eight years, has just five first downs, 135 yards of offense, and is only 2 of 9 on third down.
Kansas has crossed the 50, getting to the Mountaineer 29 midway through the second quarter where Jayhawk quarterback Montell Cozart was stopped a yard short of the first down marker on his fourth and two run.
