A Special Fall Season in WVU Athletics
November 30, 2016 09:43 AM | Football
Mountaineer Nation,
As the fall semester comes to a close, I want to take this time to congratulate our teams and fans for such a fantastic start to the athletic season.
There is no question that there are a lot of good things happening right now in our department. The women’s soccer team has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for several weeks and will be making its first trip to the College Cup this weekend. WVU will be one of four schools in the country playing for the national championship. Fan support for Nikki Izzo-Brown’s program has been tremendous with great crowds at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
Football spent time in the Top 10 and has been nationally ranked for most of the season. With the win at Iowa State, we have just turned in our 18th nine-win season in school history, and our six wins in the Big 12 are the most in our five seasons in the conference. The east side concourse renovations have made a positive impact to our fan experience at Milan Puskar Stadium, and the work on the west side is already underway.
Rifle has once again been ranked No. 1 in the country, while volleyball has shown great improvement in year two under Reed Sunahara. Cross Country sent two runners to the NCAA Championships and men’s soccer had a first-team Academic All-American, which make us all very proud.
The strong start to the athletic season has already carried over into our winter sports with the men’s and women’s basketball teams ranked in the Top 25, and Coach Huggins closing in on his 800th career win. The Coliseum concourse renovations have been met with rave reviews from you all and that work will finish in December.
Speaking of December, senior day for the football team is this Saturday against Baylor and these 21 seniors deserve our support. They have led us to an exciting season, and I know a fun bowl game is in our future.
Bowl support has always been strong for our football team, and as the bowl pairings start to take shape, I encourage all fans to consider spending some time during the holidays with us at our bowl destination.
Mountaineer Athletic Club members and football season ticket holders received priority information recently on bowl game ticket options. A strong early response from the priority mailing will make us as attractive as possible in eyes of the bowl committees. For this reason, I encourage MAC members and season ticket holders to respond by requesting their bowl tickets today at WVUGAME.com. Bowl trips are always enjoyable and this team not only deserves, but has earned our support.
Yes, good things are happening in our department, and I know they will continue as we head into the New Year. Thank you again for all you do for our athletic program and have a great upcoming holiday season.
Let’s Go Mountaineers!
