In this week’s report, Mountaineer rookies are making a defensive impact. Karl Joseph and Daryl Worley rank in the top five among NFL rookies in tackles this season. Bruce Irvin had another big performance in Oakland’s victory over Carolina.

Next Game: Practice Squad
Mario Alford signed with the New York Jets practice squad on Nov. 16. Alford was the seventh round selection by Cincinnati in the 2015 NFL Draft. He played in one game for the Bengals last year with one reception for 15 yards. He was waived/injured with an ankle injury after this year's training camp on Sept. 3.

Tavon Austin caught four passes for 45 yards and a touchdown and ran once for 10 yards in a 49-21 loss at New Orleans. Austin caught the 24-yard touchdown pass from Jared Goff in the first quarter to put the Rams up 7-0. In 11 games this season, Austin has 44 catches for 401 yards and three touchdowns. Los Angeles (4-7) visits New England (9-2) on Sunday.

Don Barclay did not play on Monday in Green Bay’s 27-13 win at Philadelphia after suffering a shoulder injury in pregame warmups against the Redskins. Barclay participated in five snaps. Green Bay (5-6) returns home to play host to Houston (6-5) on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Will Clarke made a stop and played 26 snaps in Cincinnati’s 19-14 defeat at Baltimore. The three-year pro has a career-high 12 tackles and three sacks for the Bengals this season. Cincinnati (3-7-1) plays host to Philadelphia (5-6) on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Bruce Irvin made four stops, recorded a sack, deflected a pass and hurried the quarterback three times in Oakland’s 35-32 win over Carolina on Sunday. Irvin sacked Panthers QB Cam Newton for a six-yard loss to end a Carolina drive in the second quarter. This season, Irvin has 37 tackles, four sacks, four forced fumbles and a pass deflection in 11 games. Oakland (9-2) plays host to Buffalo (6-5) on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Next Game: Injured Reserve
Will Johnson signed a free agent contract with the New York Giants in April. Johnson had played in 47 straight games in the regular season with the Steelers, which was the third-longest active streak among NFL fullbacks. However, he suffered an injury early in the preseason and was placed on the Giants injured reserve list.

Pat McAfee averaged 46.0 yards on his two punt attempts on Sunday in the Colts 28-7 loss to Pittsburgh. McAfee even threw a 35-yard pass to Erik Swoope on a fake punt in the second quarter. The play eventually set up a Colts touchdown. Indianapolis (5-6) visits the New York Jets (3-8) on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Charles Sims was placed on injured reserve on Monday, Oct. 10, after suffering a knee injury at Denver on Oct. 2. Sims, who was tabbed the starting running back after an injury to Doug Martin, ran 41 times for 116 yards and one touchdown and caught 14 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown in four games. Sims began practicing with the tam again on Nov. 23. Tampa Bay has 15 more days to decide whether to activate Sims and add him to the 53-man roster.

Wendell Smallwood led the Eagles with 37 yards on nine carries, while catching a pass for 10 yards. Smallwood has rushed 66 times for 490 yards, an average of 4.4 yards per run. Philadelphia (5-6) visits Cincinnati (3-7-1) on Sunday.
