MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Carly Black and sophomore Bianca St. Georges of the No. 1-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned 2016 Academic All-America honors today, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Mountaineer defenders, Black, a native of Horsham, Pennsylvania, was named to the second team, while St. Georges, a native of St. Felix de Valois, Quebec, landed on the third team. The honor is the second career accolade for Black and the first for St. Georges.
This marks the second straight season two Mountaineers have earned Academic All-America accolades. Eight different WVU women’s soccer student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and the Mountaineers have collected six awards in the last four seasons and 10 honors since 2001.
Black boasts a 3.91 grade point average (GPA) in exercise physiology and also is pursuing a minor in sport and exercise psychology. A three-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, she also was named to the 2014 CoSIDA Academic All-America Women’s Second Team and the NSCAA Scholar All-Region Honorable Mention Team. Black has landed on the President’s and Dean’s Lists throughout her five-year career at WVU, and she also has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
St. Georges shows a 4.0 GPA in exercise physiology. A member of the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 First Team and the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Newcomer Team, she also has been named to the President’s List, the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. She is fluent in French and English.
Black, a 2016 team captain, has played in 19 games this season and started 10, while St. Georges has started 11 of 12 matches played. The duo helped the Mountaineers (21-1-2, 8-0) sweep the Big 12 Conference titles for the third time in five seasons. Additionally, they have played alongside a defensive unit which has posted a program single-season record 16 shutouts, the second-most nationally, and allowed just nine opponent goals, also the second-fewest allowed nationally. Each has chipped in an assist this season.
The top-seeded Mountaineers play host to No. 5-ranked and third-seeded Duke in the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 3 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
