MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following his three-win performance at the 2016 Journeymen ASICS Collegiate Classic, West Virginia University’s Dylan Cottrell has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Cottrell, ranked No. 13 in the nation, went 3-0 at 165 pounds to win his pool. The Spencer, West Virginia, native topped a pair of nationally ranked opponents on his way, pushing his overall mark to 5-0 and 3-0 against ranked foes. It marks his second career Big 12 honor.
“We are proud of Dylan’s leadership on and off the mat,” said WVU coach Sammie Henson. “He is one of our captains and has helped us change the culture of this team. Good things will continue to happen for him by staying consistent throughout the year.”
Cottrell started his day with a 3-1 decision over Lehigh’s Cole Walter. He then upset No. 9 Anthony Valencia of Arizona State, using an early first-period takedown to accrue significant riding time before eventually winning a 6-5 decision. Cottrell finished the day with a win over No. 10/12 Clark Glass, escaping with four seconds on the clock to take a 1-0 decision.
The Mountaineers will take on No. 7 Nebraska on Friday evening in Lincoln in an 8 p.m. ET dual match.
