MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Last week, West Virginia returned to the top 10 in the coaches poll, and this week the national writers have deemed the Mountaineers top-10 worthy, too.
West Virginia is ranked No. 9 in this week’s coaches poll, up one spot from last week, and is No. 10 in this week’s AP poll, both released earlier today.
The Mountaineers improved to 8-1 with their 24-20 victory over Texas yesterday at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Three weeks ago, West Virginia reached No. 9 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the AP poll before suffering a 37-20 setback at Oklahoma State, which is now 13th this week in both polls.
Oklahoma (No. 8 in both polls) will be in Morgantown for a Saturday night, primetime game at Milan Puskar Stadium that will be televised nationally on ABC. It is the first meeting of top 10-ranked teams in Morgantown since 1993 when WVU played host to Miami and only the third ever.
The Sooners are coming off an impressive 45-24 victory over Baylor yesterday and have won seven in a row heading into Saturday’s game.
Tickets are still available but going fast. Log on to WVUGAME.com to order yours today, or you can call the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free 1-800-WVU-GAME beginning Monday morning at 9 a.m.
Meanwhile, the all-important College Football Rankings Poll will come early next week. Last week’s poll had West Virginia 16th, up four spots from 20th in the initial ranking.
