AMES, Iowa – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team concludes its weekend Big 12 Conference road swing at Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 9, with first kick from the Cyclone Sports Complex set for 2 p.m. ET.
The Mountaineers (11-1-1, 3-0) carry a four-match win streak into Sunday. Since losing to No. 9 Georgetown on Sept. 18, WVU has posted seven shutout halves, with the only goal allowed in four games a penalty kick by Richmond on Sept. 23.
In Big 12 play, the Mountaineers have earned a clean sheet in six of their last eight conference road matches, including a 1-0 win at Kansas on Oct. 7. The victory Friday night moved WVU, the four-time reigning conference champions, to the top of the Big 12 Conference standings.
Sunday is the fifth all-time meeting between WVU and ISU (7-4-1, 1-2-1), and the Mountaineers own a 4-0 mark. The squad has posted three straight shutouts against the Cyclones and have outscored ISU, 12-2, over the last four meetings.
“Iowa State is enjoying one of its best seasons ever and will provide a great challenge tomorrow afternoon,” Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “They are dangerous off set pieces and feature a lot of moving parts. We’re going to need to be on our toes against this squad.”
In their last meeting, WVU earned a 4-0 victory over ISU on Oct. 18, 2015, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Four different Mountaineers tallied goals, including the first career score for junior forward Heather Kaleiohi. WVU placed 12 of its 38 shots on-goal. Defensively, the team held ISU to two shots and denied the Cyclones a corner kick.
In their last meeting in Ames, the Mountaineers netted three second-half goals and defeated the Cyclones, 3-0, on Oct. 17, 2014. WVU held ISU to just two shots and also denied the Cyclones a corner kick.
Junior forward Michaela Abam continues to pace the team with 16 points (7 G, 2 A), the third-best total in the Big 12. She owns 27 career goals and needs one more to break onto the program’s all-time career goals list.
Junior midfielder Carla Portillo paces with five helpers, while senior midfielder Ashley Lawrence shows four assist on the season. Lawrence set-up Alli Magaletta’s game-winner against KU, pushing her career count to 23, the fifth-best total in program history.
Freshman Rylee Foster made two saves in the win against the Jayhawks for her fifth career shutout; the team shows seven clean sheets on the season. Foster is tops in the Big 12 with a 0.39 goals-against average (GAA).
The Cyclones are coming off a 0-0 double-overtime draw to TCU on Oct. 7, in Ames. Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon made eight saves for her school-record seventh clean sheet of the year. She shows a 0.93 GAA and has made 53 saves in 12 starts between the posts.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Steil paces ISU with seven points (1 G, 5 A). Her five helpers rank No. 3 in the Big 12. Four different Cyclones have tallied two goals this season, and the team ranks No. 9 in the conference with a 1.08 goals/game average.
