MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the third consecutive year, West Virginia University men’s soccer senior defender Jack Elliott was named to the 2016 Academic All-District 2 Men’s Soccer Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A Management Information Systems major with a 3.96 grade-point average, Elliott has started all 14 matches for the Mountaineers and logged a team-high 1,288 minutes on the pitch.
“Congratulations to our captain Jack on this great honor, yet again,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “He’s leading our team successfully on the field and clearly in the classroom as well. Student-athletes are often celebrated for outstanding athletic achievement because that’s what we read about the most; however, Jack is proof that WVU’s commitment for our student-athletes is much more because being the best academically is held at an even higher value.”
The honor is the latest in a long list of awards for the London native. The past two years, Elliott has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team while also being recognized as a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete by the Mid-American Conference and earned Academic All-MAC Team accolades. Additionally, he was named to the All-MAC Second Team in 2014 and has earned Academic All-Big 12 honors and has been named to the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, the President’s List and the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll throughout his career.
Elliott has scored one goal and added an assist for WVU this season while anchoring a back line that has recorded record-setting numbers. Elliott and the Mountaineers have eight shutouts in 2016, including a shutout streak that lasted a program-record seven consecutive matches and 758 minutes.
Elliott is one of 11 men’s soccer players named to the NCAA Division I District 2 First Team.
Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected in November.
Elliott and the Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday, when WVU travels to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to face Western Michigan. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
