WVU Leads at Halftime, 21-10
October 22, 2016 05:29 PM | Football
Quarterback Skyler Howard tossed three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia to a 21-10 halftime lead over TCU today at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Howard fired two first-quarter scoring tosses to Daikiel Shorts Jr. for 10 yards and to Shelton Gibson for 22 yards for a 14-3 first-quarter lead.
Following Brandon Hatfield’s 30-yard field goal, TCU added a touchdown when Kenny Hill threw a back-shoulder, 11-yard scoring pass to Jaelan Austin.
The Mountaineers answered late in the second quarter when Howard hit a wide-open Gary Jennings out in the flat and he was able to walk in from the 11.
WVU began the game by causing a fumble on the opening kickoff when Marvin Gross Jr. stripped the football out of Deante Gray's arms and Nana Kyeremeh recovered at the TCU 17, leading to Howard’s first touchdown toss.
West Virginia could have had more points on TCU’s next possession when Kenny Hill’s pass was intercepted by Rasul Douglas and he returned it 37 yards to the TCU 33, but when the drive stalled at the Horned Frog 30, Mike Molina’s 47-yard field goal try with the wind sailed wide left.
West Virginia’s inability to secure an another errant Hill pass at the TCU five led to Hatfield’s successful field goal.
WVU had a slight 215-207 edge in total yardage while Howard completed 8 of his 12 pass attempts for 143 yards.
Hill was 12 of 17 for 104 yards and a TD.
Kyle Hicks led TCU with 77 yards on 13 carries while Rushel Shell was West Virginia’s top ground gainer with 59 yards on nine carries.
More details to come.
