MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the first time in the program’s 21-year history, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team ranks No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll.
By virtue of today’s ranking, WVU is the nation’s unanimous No. 1-ranked team, as the squad also sits at No. 1 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Poll and the Soccer America Poll.
The Mountaineers (12-1-1, 4-0) also are the first Big 12 Conference program to earn the No. 1 ranking in the NSCAA Poll.
WVU was ranked No. 3 in last week’s poll. Prior to today’s ranking, the Mountaineers had been ranked this season as high as No. 2 on Sept. 13.
The Mountaineers received 17 of the 30 available first-place votes. South Carolina (13-0-1, 7-0 SEC) and Stanford (11-1-1, 4-1 Pac-12), the previous top-ranked team, received six first-place votes each and rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Duke (10-2-2, 5-0-1 ACC) sits at No. 4 and is followed by Virginia (10-2-2, 3-1-2 ACC) at No. 5.
USC (10-3, 4-1 Pac-12) ranks No. 6, and Georgetown (9-2-2, 2-0-2 Big East) is No. 7. BYU (11-2-1, 1-1-1 WCC) received the final first-place vote and checks-in at No. 8. Florida State (9-2-2, 3-1-2 ACC) and California (11-2-1, 4-0-1 Pac-12) round out the top 10.
WVU is the only Big 12 Conference team ranked in today’s poll. Baylor, Oklahoma and Kansas received votes.
The Mountaineers return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium this week for a match against Texas Tech on Friday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. The contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
The first 175 fans into the stadium Friday night will receive a free “Almost Heaven” long sleeve t-shirt. Additionally, the first 75 Mountaineer Maniacs inside the gate will receive a free scarf.
Friday night is the team’s annual “Soctoberfest” celebration, and specialty German food and beverage options will be available at the concession stands. It also is “Good Student Night.” Youths 13 years and younger who bring an assignment or test with an ‘A’ or star on it will receive free admission.
Tickets are on sale now at WVUGAME.com. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youths and senior citizens and $2 for groups of 10 or more. WVU students are admitted free with a valid WVU Student I.D.
