Mountaineers Lead 22-18 at Halftime

PHOENIX - What we saw in the first half was basically a microcosm of the way these two teams have played all season – inconsistently.
West Virginia got touchdown passes of 59 and 10 yards from quarterback Skyler Howard and three field goals from place kicker Josh Lambert to take a 22-18 lead over Arizona State into the locker room at halftime.
But the Mountaineers’ halftime lead could have been double digits if not for some poor special teams play.
Following Daikiel Shorts’ 10-yard touchdown reception in the corner of the end zone with 28 seconds left in the first half to make the score 22-13, WVU, Lambert’s point after try was blocked and returned 98 yards by Tim White to give the Sun Devils two points. That’s a three-point swing when you count the point West Virginia didn’t get.
Then, on the ensuing kickoff, West Virginia tried a short kick that was recovered by ASU at its own 49. Two Mike Bercovici passes got the Sun Devils into position for Zane Gonzalez to kick a 35-yard field goal, his third of the game.
The Sun Devils also scored on a Bercovici 19-yard touchdown pass to Devin Lucien in the second quarter.
West Virginia went up and down the field on Arizona State’s porous pass defense, Howard finishing the first half completing 15 of his 26 pass attempts for 334 yards.
Bercovici was also successful throwing the football for ASU, the senior completing 15-of-25 passes for 205 yards.
The two teams combined to produce 651 total yards in the first half.
West Virginia will kick off to Arizona State to begin the second half.
