MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On the heels of her record-setting performance in an 8-0 win over Villanova on Sept. 6, West Virginia University women’s soccer sophomore Michaela Abam has been named the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Today’s honor is the second career award for the forward and her first recognition this season. A native of Houston, she is the reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
Abam set multiple records in the Mountaineers’ resounding victory against the Wildcats, scoring a program-best four goals, two in each half, for eight points, also a WVU single-game record. She placed all five of her shots on-goal.
After three weeks of play, Abam ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 in shots (28) and goals (5). She ranks second behind teammate Kailey Utley (11) in points (10).
WVU’s eight scores matched the program record, first set in a win against St. Bonaventure on Sept. 10, 2006, and hit again in a victory over Syracuse on Sept. 28, 2008.
Iowa State’s Lindsey Hendon was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, and TCU’s Faith Carter was tabbed the Big 12 Freshman of the Week.
The No. 5/8 Mountaineers (5-1) have earned a conference-best four weekly awards in three weeks.
Abam also was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week today.
WVU returns to the road for a match at RV/No. 15 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, Sept. 11, with first kick from Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium set for 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers then face Longwood at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. The team will host a clinic for kids 13 and under at the recreational field just outside the stadium’s main gate. It also is “Camper Reunion Day,” with free admission for those who wear their 2015 camp t-shirt. Additionally, kids under 13 who bring a completed Musket Coloring Sheet to the DDSS gate will receive one free youth admission and will be entered into a drawing to win a plush Musket toy.
