MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team moved up two spots to a program-high No. 5 in today’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women’s Top 25 Poll.
Today’s ranking is the Mountaineers’ best position in the coaches’ poll in the program’s 20-year history. WVU (9-1) hit No. 6 three times in 2006.
WVU is the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team. Texas Tech (6-1-2) ranks No. 15, and Oklahoma is receiving votes.
Virginia (7-0-1) continues to rank No. 1, and North Carolina (8-0-1) ranks No. 2. Florida State (7-1-1) sits at No. 3, and Texas A&M (9-1) ranks No. 4.
BYU (7-1) follows WVU at No. 6. Clemson (7-0-1) ranks No. 7 and is followed by Stanford (6-2), Florida (7-2) and Virginia Tech (8-1-1).
The Mountaineers also are ranked No. 4 in this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll. The ranking matches the program’s highest ranking in any poll.
WVU, the three time reigning Big 12 Conference champion, opens its league schedule against Texas on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m., at DDSS. A special ceremony recognizing the program’s 20th season will take place prior to first kick. Mountaineer alums also will be honored at halftime as part of alumni weekend.
All fans will have the opportunity to take their picture with the team’s 2014 Big 12 regular-season and championship trophies prior to kickoff Friday night. Additionally, the first 200 fans through the gate will receive a WVU Big 12 t-shirt, and the first 100 Mountaineer Maniacs will receive gym shorts.
