Mountaineers Retain No. 4 Ranking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team continues to sit at No. 4 in today’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll.
The Mountaineers first hit the ranking last week. The position matches the team’s highest ranking in any poll, first earned in the Soccer Buzz Poll on Nov. 4, 2002.
WVU (9-1) continues to be the highest ranked Big 12 Conference team. Texas Tech (6-1-2) ranks No. 16.
Virginia (7-0-1) again is the No. 1-ranked team. North Carolina (8-0-1) ranks No. 2, and Florida State (7-1-1) is No. 3. BYU (7-1) is up four spots to No. 5.
Clemson (7-0-1) is No. 6, and Notre Dame (7-1-1) is down two spots to No. 7. Penn State (6-2-1) ranks No. 8, and Florida (7-2) and Rutgers (8-0) round out the top 10.
The first NCAA Women’s Soccer RPI also was released today, and WVU debuts at No. 14. The Mountaineers are the highest positioned Big 12 team, with the Red Raiders following at No. 28. Oklahoma (5-4) sits at No. 46.
Clemson ranks No. 1, with Rutgers sitting at No. 2 and BYU at No. 3. Penn State ranks No. 4, and Santa Clara (6-3) is No. 5.
The remainder of the top 10 is: No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Florida State, No. 8 Stanford (6-2), No. 9 California (6-1-2) and No. 10 North Carolina.
The Mountaineers closed their nonconference slate over the weekend with a pair of 1-0 wins at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU knocked off Buffalo in overtime on Sept. 18, and defeated Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 20.
WVU, the three time reigning Big 12 Conference champions, opens its league schedule against Texas on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m., at DDSS. A special ceremony recognizing the program’s 20th season will take place prior to first kick. Mountaineer alums also will be honored at halftime as part of alumni weekend.
All fans will have the opportunity to take their picture with the team’s 2014 Big 12 regular-season and championship trophies prior to kickoff Friday night. Additionally, the first 200 fans through the gate will receive a WVU Big 12 t-shirt, and the first 100 Mountaineer Maniacs will receive gym shorts.
