MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 18/RV Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (2-5-0) took a 1-0 lead on a Jack Elliott goal in the 54th minute, but the Hoyas (3-2-2) answered with three goals. GU netted its first in the 60th minute on a penalty kick after a WVU red card, and played the remainder of the game with a man advantage.
“It’s a shame, we played well enough to be ahead 1-0 against one of the best teams in the country at home,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “Our gameplan was working, we were up 1-0 with 30 minutes to play. We’re on the right track, we’re just shooting ourselves in the foot over and over again.”
Elliott recorded his second goal of the season at 53:11. It came off a free kick just outside the box from straight on and avoided the wall of Georgetown defenders.
Playing their second ranked opponent of the season, the Mountaineers posted three shots, two in the second half. Along with Elliott, senior Jamie Merriam and sophomore Joey Piatczyc registered shots in the contest. The Hoyas had 16 shots.
Freshman goaltender Alec Boerner made the first start of his career and had seven saves, the most by a West Virginia goaltender in a match this season.
Georgetown evened the score at 59:32 on a penalty kick by Brandon Allen. The PK was the result of a red card on WVU senior Francio Henry
The Hoyas went ahead 2-1 on a Matthew Ledder goal at 65:34.
In the 81st minute, WVU had a chance to tie the match at 2-2. The ball bounced around the goalie box, but the Mountaineers could not put a clean foot on the ball to send it in.
On its next possession, at 81:14, Georgetown extended its lead to 3-1 on a goal by Bakie Goodman.
West Virginia stays at home to face UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff between WVU and UNC Greensboro has been set for noon, before the 3 p.m. home football game. Admission to the match at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium will be free, courtesy of WVU Medicine.
