MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Kadeisha Buchanan of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The honor is the fourth career award for the junior defender and her second recognition of the season.
Buchanan anchored a Mountaineer defense that earned two shutout victories over the weekend, pushing WVU’s season shutout total to seven. WVU defeated RV/15 Ohio State, 2-0, in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 11, and earned a 4-0 victory against Longwood on Sept. 13 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The WVU defense allowed just five shots all weekend, and the Mountaineers denied Longwood a shot, the second time in as many seasons the Mountaineers held an opponent without a single shot.
Buchanan, a native of Brampton, Ontario, also helped the Mountaineers’ offensive attack, netting the game winner at OSU in the 77th minute as she connected on a header off the team’s third corner kick of the match, for her first score of the season. The win was the team’s second against a ranked Big Ten Conference opponent in as many weeks.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I Women’s Top 25 Poll also was announced today, and the Mountaineers moved up one spot to No. 7.
The ranking is WVU’s (7-1) best position since it was ranked No. 7 in the Nov. 11, 2014 poll. The Mountaineers were ranked as high as No. 6 three times in 2006.
Virginia (6-0-1) is ranked No. 1, while Florida State (6-1) sits at No. 2 and North Carolina (7-0-1) is No. 3. Penn State (5-1-1) ranks No. 4, and Texas A&M (7-1) and Stanford (5-1) sit just in front of WVU at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
BYU (6-1) follows WVU at No. 8, and Virginia Tech (7-0-1) and Notre Dame (7-0-1) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers checked in at No. 4 in yesterday’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Poll, matching the program’s highest-ever ranking in any poll.
WVU concludes its nonconference slate this weekend with two matches at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers will play host to Buffalo on Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m., and Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
Sunday is a “Dollar Day,” and a tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. Additionally, Youth Soccer Day is scheduled for Sunday, and all youth teams in attendance will have an opportunity to participate in a parade at halftime.
Tickets for both matches are available at WVUGAME.com.
