Mountaineers Lead Liberty at Halftime
September 12, 2015 04:40 PM | Football
Skyler Howard threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Shelton Gibson, Josh Lambert kicked a pair of field goals and the defense remains unscored upon as the Mountaineers take a 20-0 lead over Liberty at halftime.
The Mountaineer offense was 4-for-4 on their first four drives of the half, West Virginia’s other touchdown coming when Wendell Smallwood recovered his fumble in the end zone, and it could have had more points on its last possession of the half.
After Liberty kicker John Lunsford missed his third field goal attempt, a 31-yarder, West Virginia drove to the Flame 37 where Lambert was forced to try a 54-yard field goal. His kick was on line but landed underneath the goal post as the first half ended.
Howard completed 14-of-17 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown and also led the Mountaineers with 62 yards on nine rushes, including a 34-yard scamper in the first quarter that led to Lambert’s second field goal.
Gibson caught two passes for 63 yards while Wendell Smallwood had seven carries for 44 yards.
Liberty quarterback Josh Woodrum completed 11-of-17 passes for 97 yards, four of those going to Darrin Peterson for 64 yards.
Including last Saturday’s 44-0 shutout win over Georgia Southern last weekend, the West Virginia has now blanked its opponents for six straight quarters – the first time that has happened since the Mountaineers began the 1977 season with a shutout victory over Richmond and blanked Maryland 24-0 in the first half.
Incidentally, the Terps nearly came back to win that game in the second half.
More to come after the game.
