MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a two-win weekend in which the West Virginia University women’s soccer team handed each of its opponents their first loss of the season, the Mountaineers continue to sit at No. 11 in this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 Poll.
This marks the Mountaineers’ (3-1) second straight week at No. 11. WVU remains the highest-ranked Big 12 Conference team, with Texas Tech (2-1) trailing at No. 13.
The top of the poll is slightly altered, as Virginia (3-0) is the new top team. Stanford (2-0) is up one spot to No. 2, and Florida State (3-1) moves down two spots to No. 3. North Carolina (4-0) and Penn State (3-0-1) flipped positions and now rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
The bottom half of the top 10 is unchanged, with Notre Dame (4-0) sitting at No. 6, and Florida (3-1) following at No. 7. UCLA (2-1) ranks No. 8, Texas A&M (4-0) is No. 9 and Virginia Tech (3-0-1) is No. 10.
WVU bounced back over the weekend with a pair of shutout wins, earning a 1-0 victory at Maryland on Aug. 28 and downing Duquesne, 5-0, in its home season opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Aug. 30. Senior forward Kailey Utley tallied the game-winner in both matches and finished the weekend with five points (2 G, 1). The WVU defense held its opponents to seven combined shots, with UMD placing two on-goal.
The Mountaineers continue their homestand and play host to the Nittany Lions on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. The match is a “Gold Rush,” and all fans are encouraged to wear gold. The first 200 Mountaineer Maniacs also will receive a women’s soccer t-shirt. Additionally, the team will celebrate its 20th season with a special pregame celebration.
WVU then welcomes Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. Local youth soccer players are encouraged to wear their team jerseys to the match, and the first 20 through the gates will receive a free red hair braid. The Mountaineers will meet with fans and sign autographs following the contest.
