MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a game-winning performance in her first collegiate contest, West Virginia University women’s soccer freshman Nia Gordon has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Gordon, a native of Ocklawaha, Florida, gave WVU its first goal of the season in the 20th minute of the team’s 2-0 victory against SIUE on Friday, Aug. 21, at Indiana’s Hoosier Classic. After receiving a ball from Ashley Lawrence at the top of the 18-yard line, Gordon beat the Cougar defenders with her speed before sending a low shot toward the far left post.
Along with classmate Hannah Abraham, Gordon became the first freshman since 2008 to register a goal in a WVU season opener. Friday’s win pushed the Mountaineers’ program-record unbeaten streak to 20.
Gordon started both matches this weekend at forward and finished with two shots.
