MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 12-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team travels to No. 25 Georgetown for an exhibition match on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m., at Shaw Field, in Washington, D.C.
The match will be the Mountaineers’ final exhibition of the 2015 preseason. The squad played to a 2-2 draw against Wright State on Aug. 9, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Wednesday evening pits WVU against its final opponent of 2014, as the Mountaineers and the Hoyas played to a 0-0 tie in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament on Nov. 15. GU earned a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks and advanced to the second round.
“It will be good for this team to get out on the road and compete against a great opponent in Georgetown,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We’re looking forward to seeing this team execute what we’ve been working on in camp against quality competition. We’ve been focused on growing as a group, and that will continue to be our focus tomorrow.”
WVU came back from two one-goal deficits on Sunday, with senior forward Kailey Utley and sophomore forward Michaela Abam registering the scores. Goalkeepers Michelle Newhouse and Hannah Steadman split time in net, with each allowing one score.
The Mountaineers finished with a 10-3 advantage in shots on-goal and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Tomorrow is the first exhibition of the season for the Hoyas. GU returns 13 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a 2014 squad that finished 11-5-6 overall.
