WVU's Gibson Donates to BMH Project

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Some people give with their head and some people give with their heart. West Virginia University defensive coordinator Tony Gibson recently did both.
Gibson made a $25,000 donation to the Boone Memorial Hospital Building Project. His contribution was made public last weekend when Gibson returned to Boone County to take part in the 28th Annual Boone County Mountaineer Golf Outing, Pig Roast and Barbeque, held on Saturday, July 18 at the Riverview Country Club in Madison, West Virginia, to support scholarships for local Boone County WVU students.
Ground was broken on the new Boone Memorial Hospital in 2014 and is scheduled to open in the spring of 2016.
“That’s probably the biggest project in the county for a long time,” said Gibson. “They’re building a new hospital and it’s just a way for us to give back to a community that has given so much to me and my family.”
A fundraising goal of $5 million was established to supplement the nearly $34 million the county borrowed with the help from a USDA Rural Development loan.
According to the Boone Memorial Hospital Campaign website, the new hospital will have modern, state-of-the-art, family friendly rooms, all private and on one level. The new facility – designed with direction and feedback from BMH employees and physicians – will be a “welcoming, patient-centric hospital that ensures departments and services have adequate space and technology to grow well into the future.”
Gibson grew up in Van and later played college football at Glenville State. His coaching career includes stops at Glenville State, Cumberland University, West Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Michigan, Pitt, Arizona and again WVU, but never along the way did he forget about his hometown roots.
“I’ve spent time at that hospital, along with my family and everybody else, and I thought that would just be a good way to help them out,” explained Gibson.
Gibson said his contribution is not earmarked toward any specific area.
“They need to have the best doctors, equipment and facilities available to service the community and hopefully this donation can help them achieve that. It was something I was very interested in doing,” he said. “I’m sure the money is going to be used the right way for the right things.”
