MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Canadian Women’s National Team was eliminated from the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Saturday evening, as the home team fell, 2-1, to England in a quarterfinal match in front of 54,027 fans at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
The Canadians fell behind early, giving up two goals in the first 14 minutes, but a chance in the 42nd minute brought the squad to within striking distance. West Virginia University junior midfielder Ashley Lawrence generated the opportunity, receiving the ball in the middle of the penalty box and sending a shot toward the goal that England’s Karen Bardsley stopped but could not control. Sinclair pounced and converted.
England took advantage of two early chances, as Jodie Taylor netted a goal in the 11th minute and Lucy Bronze scored in the 14th minute.
Lawrence and defender Kadeisha Buchanan, also a WVU junior, played the full 90 minutes; Buchanan, a native of Brampton, Ontario, played all 90 minutes in each of Canada’s matches.
“From the first minute to the last, we gave everything we could, so the loss wasn’t for a lack of effort,” Buchanan said to FIFA.com following the defeat. “We came close in the final minutes and as the game went on we felt like we were getting nearer. I’m sure that if we’d have had a few more minutes, we’d have done it.
“We came really close to a place in the semifinals, but our main target was to make people proud of us, to inspire the nation. When I think about the support we’ve received and how sad the people who had cheered us on were at the end of the match, I tell myself that at least we’ve accomplished this mission.”
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup semifinals are set, with Germany and the United States meeting on Tuesday, June 30, at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, at 7 p.m. ET. England will face defending champion Japan on Wednesday, July 1, at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, at 7 p.m. ET. The winners will meet in the tournament final on Sunday, July 5, at BC Place Stadium, at 7 p.m. ET.
